Hello, great blog! My husband and I recently brought home a 5 month old Vizsla named Luna. We are experienced runners and cannot wait to have Luna accompany us on some of our weekly runs. Do you have advice for when to start running and how long to run? We don't want to push her too soon, but she is already a bottle of energy!
Hi! Yes, I have a little info on my running page (here: http://vizslathing.blogspot.com/p/running.html) - but generally, we did very minimal running when he was less than 12 months old (from maybe 6-8 months we'd do a 1-3 mile every now and then)- after that, I gradually built up with him, starting from about 3 mile runs. Now, Captain runs maybe 20-25 miles a week total, and most of that is 3-5 mile runs. I don't really take him on runs over 10 miles (although his longest so far has been 13-14, and he can handle it fine). Let me know if you have more questions! The vet recommended waiting to run with him til he was a year, so we paid attention to that. After that, I look at it like any other runner- building up mileage, avoiding overtraining, hydrating, trying to stay off pavement too much, etc etc.
Incredibly sweet photo!
ReplyDeleteI know, I just want to kiss him!
