The High Chair

Meet Captain's new best friend. No, not my daughter... the high chair. ;)

Captain runs to sit by it the second I put her in there. He's practically on point for falling food.

Nugget 2 is also learning.... that it is very fun to watch Captain eat food. She is also trying to convince him to lick her hands- this weekend he looked at me as she was holding 2 tiny palms covered in food out to him, as if to say, "Can I, Mom? Can I please lick them??!" I just raised an eyebrow. I know it's only a matter of time.....

Pinecrest Lake Getaway!

We piled up the nuggets in the car and took a little trip to the mountains this weekend! My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and we always love to get away and spend time together in the great outdoors. Captain was pretty psyched to hunt squirrels and birds in a whole new area!

Captain's 6th Birthday!

Happy Birthday to Captain! SIX years old! All dressed up in his birthday bow (and about to get tackled by his little sis). It's been a big year of change for Captain, of course....last year at this time he was the only nugget in the house, and now- well, now we know that's all changed!

The Toddler

Over the past few months, I've come to think of Captain more and more as my "toddler." You've heard me refer to him as my first baby, and it really does fit in many ways. He throws little "temper tantrums" when he wants more attention or play time (though these are much more tame and- let's face it- cuter- than a two year old's breakdowns.... he simply pulls out his blankie and whips it around in his mouth, or takes a toy and shoves it in front of us), he follows us around (ok, that's just typical Vizsla), and recently, when Nugget 2 started moving around, I think that's when it really clicked for him. I could practically see his mind thinking: Oh my God. You mean this thing can move? We need to hide my toys. ;)

Santa Cruz Weekend

Another Cali getaway for Captain! Ok, this trip was more about his little sister than him, but we did take the whole family down the coast to the fun beach town of Santa Cruz. We actually spent the night up in the hills, which afforded amazing views of the ocean off in the distance. We stayed in the dog-friendly Chaminade resort, although I'm cheating a bit by saying that, because Captain spent the night with some of our friends who live in Santa Cruz (so we could avoid the pricey $75/night dog fee!) But never fear, we still took our "first baby" to a dog-friendly beach, and he joined us for brunch on the patio the next morning too. So, overall, we managed to keep BOTH nuggets happy on our first weekend away as a family of four!

Vizsla Gear II: The Active Family Dog

Last year I did a "Vizsla Gear" post including a bunch of stuff we've found useful for life with the active dog. I'm adding a few things here for those of you who may be interested in stuff that has come in handy for the "active family dog".

Nugget updates

What's new with Captain? He's checking in on nugget 2 more and more. Today, he learned for the first time what the high chair is all about... and something tells me he's gonna be sitting by it an awful lot ;-)

Captain America

Happy Memorial Day (for our U.S. friends)! We enjoyed our first holiday weekend together since I started my new job. On the agenda? A long(er) run with Captain, of course! For more updates, read on.

Fun Run

A few shots from my last run as a free woman...ok, ok, just from my last afternoon run in the sun before my new job starts. Tuesday Captain and I enjoyed a gorgeous run in one of my favorite spots in the entire world - Berkeley. We took the afternoon off and were both grinning from ear to ear ;)

Work Changes

This is a hard post to write... lots of changes going on around here, and things are moving faster than I knew they could. Just shy of two months after I gave birth, I had a job interview for a new position (because, you know, I just wasn't busy enough lol). It was a somewhat lengthy approval and negotiation process, but I will now be starting my new job TOMORROW. It will be a BIG change, since I've had the luxury of working from home for most of my post-college life so far, and for nearly all of the past 5 years. Which means that Captain has had a ton of Mommy time. Ironically, it also means I will have spent more time "raising" my dog than my human child, but I am grateful for the 5 months I have gotten with my (human) baby, since I know that is much more than most women in this country get. In any case, I thought it was worth paying a little tribute to my working-from-home days with Captain, since office life is going to quite different!

The Patient Vizsla

Patient? A Vizsla? The high-energy dog that's always ready to get out for a run, a chase, a hunt? Captain has actually always been relatively good at waiting to go out (you know, within reason)- but over the past two months, his level of patience has grown. He carefully watches us with his baby sister, waiting for his turn. Yes, of course he still pushes himself in when he feels he's waited too long, but he has done a really good job I think!

TAILS from the other side...

... the "other side" of pregnancy, that is! Read on for some highlights from the past month after our new addition to Captain's family!
