The Bumps are Back

Or rather, the bumps WERE back. I started writing this post in early December, when Captain broke out in a ton of those little skin bumps, but then I never got around to finishing or posting this. I had big plans to do a detailed search, track downs and provide tons of information on skin bumps and allergies in dogs in general and in Vizslas in particular.... and then suddenly, after only a few days, the bumps just went away on their own. And also, let's be honest- I just didn't have the time to do the research and write-up. But, I'm finally getting around to posting something, and figured I'd do a quick update, even if it's not the comprehensive resource I was planning to post. (FYI, you can see my previous posts on Vizsla allergies here: types of bumps and our first experience with allergies - in both posts, readers have left comments that may be useful to others experiencing these issues).

You can see in the pictures what the bumps look like- we've experienced these in the past a few times, and they always seem to be food-related. This time, I was worried it was a reaction to any of the many new foods Captain's been getting from the Highchair fallout. I didn't want it to be her food, because it makes both Captain and Nugget 2 so happy to "share" it, and ok, it makes my cleanup sooooo much easier ;)

Anyway, as I mentioned, surprisingly the bumps went away very quickly, all on their own this time. In the past, it's taken at least a month for them to disappear, and usual after some careful elimination of certain foods. I have no idea what caused the reaction this time, but I'm happy the bumps went away so quickly. I did stop allowing Captain to eat allllll of Nugget 2's leftovers, and am trying to be more careful about what he does get of hers.

I'm sorry to say I don't have real expert advice here on the broader topic; allergies & skin reactions seem to be fairly common in Vizslas. But, it is an issue we've had come up a few times, so I'm just updating. I'll add more info here if I ever have time, or feel free (as always!) to leave a comment.....

  1. Our Vizsla has had this a few times before too, but we were thinking it was maybe a reaction to a bug bite or some sort of grass. Has your research pointed you toward anything like that? If you learn more, do pass it on! :)

    1. The first go around, our vet said one possibility was a flea reaction. Other possibilities were a reaction to pesticide sprays or herbicides used on fields, or foods.....so yes, bugs or grass could be possible. Definitely helps to take note of when the bumps start and think about what other new experiences (food or otherwise) occurred at the same time...
